About Us

Our country ,is one hand of UNESCO Word Heritage Agreement, as a result of working under responsibility of General Directorate of Culture and Nature Protecting, 9 new place had been recorded to the list of Word Heritage, till nowadays. One of this place is Pamukkale (Hierapolis) since 09.12.1988. (list number 485).
Hierapolis 1. Degree Archaeological and Natural Site Area, has a rich cultural heritage with its historical and natural specialities. Our country has a very rich cultural and historical heritage, as a center of civilisation, and our country’s this wealth has been supporting with unique natural beauty
2872 no. Environment Law’s 9’th paragraph requires that “Council of Ministers, for the purpose of transposing natural beauties to the next generations and kepping this sensitive places which are sensitive about pollution, authoritative to declare this places Private under Protection Place”. On this way Pamukkale became the Private under Protection Place in 22.10.1990. The total area of Pamukkale is 44km. In the Pamukkale Private Nature Protecting Area, there are 5 places which are Develi, Karahayıt, Pamukkale, Yeniköy and Akköy. Pamukkale 1. Degree Archaeological and Natural Site Area’s size is 1100 hectare.

Hierapolis/Pamukkale has been suggested for joining The List of Word Culture Heritage in December 1987. ICOMOS site area’s 2 speciality has been considered in the meeting to support the suggestion. This two attractive points were those;

    ►An example of rarely stumbling Greko-Roman thermal plant which founded in an area with unique natural spacialities.
Reason: ‘therapeutic virtues of water,has been used in large hot water pools, swimming pools and so many thermal plants. Local Religious ceremonies had been made with Hydrotherape. The Apollo Temple that contains kinds of Chtonian Gods, builded on a breach which toxic smoke comes from. The theatre’s history goes till Sevrus period. It is decorated with an admirable frieze and it shows a religious ceremony and sacrificing of s.o. to Artemis (Ephesus).2 km long necropolis (cemetery) shows how was funeral ceremony in Greko-Roman period.
    ►With the group cathedral, christening and church, an important example to the early Christian arthitecture.
Reason: The most important monument that is outside from the North-west walls of the city is St. Philip Martyrium. On the top of monumental stairs, building’s octagon form is taking attention. From the center of octagon to the side little churchs, poligonal coridors and trigon rooms limited with the colonades, and all of them taken in a chircle by rectangle rooms in the end this rooms become in a square building.
